Top Down Architecture

Top Down Architecture

IT infrastructure needs to be built from the top down, after careful analysis of business process and application requirements.  Data management is key to driving out cost, optimizing assets, reducing risk and improving productivity.  Is this how your systems are built?

The Green Machine

The Green Machine

Green is this year's black.  Not surprisingly, every hardware vendor on the planet (and a few software folks too) have taken to calling its product green.  Do their stories make sense?  How can you get to lower power consumption by plugging more gear into the wall socket?

Array Deconstruction

Array Deconstruction

Innovative only begins to describe Xiotech's Intelligent Storage Element (ISE).  It is downright disruptive, breaking the storage industry's practice of using proprietary "value-add" functionality you may or may not need to jack up platform cost and stove-piping management.  Worth a closer look.

Recovery Testing Optimized

Recovery Testing Optimized

An untested business continuity plan has no efficacy, but many companies do not test their plans.  Part of the problem is the complexity of the task.  Software aggregators and wrappers can help cut the testing workload down to size, enabling better test time use.

Data Normalization After M&A

Data Normalization After M&A

M&A activity is on the rise, but corporate management rarely understands the potentially enormous task (or cost) of normalizing the data assets of the new corporate entity.  Are there tools that can help?

Do You Have a C-4 Strategy?

Do You Have a C-4 Strategy?

Four issues are on the minds of business managers today:  cost containment, compliance, continuity and carbon footprint reduction.  These C-4 objectives need to be addressed by business-savvy IT planning that focuses on right-sized infrastructure, web services management and data management. ...

The Right Service for the Job

The Right Service for the Job

Protecting the data asset is all important these days.  However all data is not equally important from a compliance or continuity perspective.  Selective application of protection services, from encryption to replication or backup, makes sense, but are we using these services sensibly?

Time to Join the Data Management Institute

Data Management Institute logoThe Data Management Institute, a member-driven organization for those who create, manage and protect corporate data assets, is growing daily.  More than 7000 members have undertaken free training for Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) and Certified Data Protection Specialist (CDPS) credentials.  Plus, DMI has launched several successful campaigns to advance member goals, including the National Data Awareness Project, the Purpose Built Storage Project, and the Green Data Project.

With a generous contribution from this year's sponsor, FileTek, DMI is once again offering memberships at no cost.  Plus, we are setting up a video-based version of our training programs for new members.  Check it out!
And in other news
gavelDe-duplication technology may be all the rage, but will it pass muster with a compliance audit or a legal challenge?  DMI is investigating.
imageAnalysts claim that even with a 300% increase in storage capacity, companies will not keep pace with data growth. Fact or FUD?

Archive Management.org

Roughly 40% of the storage capacity you currently own is occupied by inert data:  important to retain, but rarely accessed.

Archiving is the answer, and Archive Management.org provides the resources you need to build an effective strategy.

Green Data Project.org

Whether you want to help stop climate change or reduce your utility power bill, green IT is probably on your mind.

Most so-called "solutions" provide a tactical fix at best. Only data management offers a strategic path to green. We explore the issue on the Green Data Project.

Security Alert

The poor state of data security is a reflection of many things -- porous software is key among them. Security Management.org will shortly begin publishing "report cards" for popular applications.

#1 Data Management Issue

Data management begins with data classification

Infrastructure

Building Block Storage?

Building Block StorageWith storage arrays like Xiotech's Intelligent Storage Element, web services-based management, Zetera's UDP/IP interconnect, Crossroads Systems' service-hosting router, and Woven Systems' 10GBE switches, how much longer can the industry sustain stovepipe storage architecture?

The deconstruction of the storage "system" may well be at hand. And, if it's the end of the (storage) world as we know it, I feel fine.

Management

Data Genome Project

Data inherits its value from the business process like so much DNAWhen they mapped the human genome, they thought the heavy lifting was done. Not so. Now comes the hard part: identifying the interrelationships between genes.

Data DNA must also be mapped back to both business process and infrastructure if we are to make any headway toward improving utilization efficiency in our storage investments.

Classification

Classifying Data Based on User Role

image

Policy-based classification of data is where the rubber meets the road in a data management or intelligent archiving strategy.  Getting it done without user participation is the problem.  Evidence suggests that users won't cooperate with anything less than a senior management mandate enforced with draconian zeal, and most organizations lack the disciplinary culture of, say, ancient Sparta.

A solution might be to classify data invisibly based on user role -- already a technique widely used in information security and system access control.  Trusted Edge is pioneering this space.

Security

A False Sense of Security?

 security

Microsoft tells us that there are 37 ways to code a function in C# and only about 7 are secure.  Lack of attention to this point has created a lot of holes in common operating system and application software that can be readily exploited by the hacker community.  That means that most of the money being spent on locking the front door with passwords and IDs is being wasted.  Intruders and insiders can access systems and apps without triggering any security alarms at all.

The solution is better software, but the industry is reluctant to fix the holes before releasing products for sale.  Our software report cards will underscore the need for security QA.

Trendwatch

The Real Impact of Server Virtualization

trends

VMware?  Hyper-V?  Zen?  In the final analysis, the real impact of the current server virtualization phenom may have little if anything to do with host consolidation.  Challenges with virtualizing machines in x86 are refocusing attention on the need for improved management and end to end conceptualization of systems, including software, server, network and storage.

From where we're sitting, it's a good thing.
